Now available in Europe, HMD Global just debuted their latest smartphone, the HMD Fusion. At €269.99 for the model with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, or €299.99 for the version with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, the Fusion offers an interesting design idea to the market.
The HMD Fusion’s modular approach, which lets users replace coverings known as Fusion costumes, is its strongest quality. Additional features such wireless charging, more tough protection, or even a built-in ring light may be included on these bespoke covers. This modular design offers a unique twist and greater control over the things consumers want for in their phone.
HMD is not the first business to investigate modularity in cellphones, however; earlier initiatives by other companies have not proved particularly successful. Still to be seen is if HMD can buck this trend.
Fusion clothing is not currently available; first-party accessories should arrive between October and December. Customers only will be able to purchase the phone itself till then. HMD provides a Fusion Development Toolkit for individuals who like customizing so users may 3D print their own designs.
Hardware-wise, the HMD Fusion sports a 6.56-inch IPS LCD display with an HD+ resolution and a 90 Hz refresh rate—though some would argue that over the modular approach a 120 Hz OLED screen would have been a wiser investment. The phone has a 5,000 mAH battery supporting 33W cable charging, a 50 MP front-facing camera for selfies, and a 108 MP primary camera. The Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 chipset drives it to provide good performance for regular chores.
Although the modular architecture of the Fusion is still under development, it is still a fascinating idea and time will tell if HMD can create a market niche using this original technique.
