We have previously looked at the Google Pixel 9 and the Pixel 9 Pro XL, which sit opposite ends of the new Pixel 9 series. It’s time now to explore the Pixel 9 Pro, the middle kid with all the “Pro” capabilities devoid of extra-large size.
Given that the Pixel 9 Pro has the same small dimensions— 152.8 x 72 x 8.5 mm—it is amazing that Google packed that much technology inside it. Although the Pro weights 199 grams and is only one gram heavier, it still feels robust and well-built with an amazing tech capacity.
What then does the Pro provide over the fully packed Pixel 9? Joining the 50MP primary camera with 48MP ultrawide camera, the outstanding improvement is the 48MP, 5x optical zoom periscope telephoto lens. With a 42MP selfie camera, the Pro moves up front to provide selfie aficioners amazing resolution. The Pro model also has a superior 6.3-inch OLED display, which supports a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+, but comes with a greater resolution (1280 x 2856 pixels), enhanced brightness, and LTPO technology for dynamic refresh rate changes unlike the normal Pixel 9.
Faster wireless charging is another obvious improvement as the Pixel 9 Pro supports 21W wireless charging with the Pixel Stand instead of the 15W on the ordinary edition. Though it’s somewhat less than last year’s Pixel 8 Pro, both smartphones have the same 4,700 mAh battery—which is fair for a little phone like the Pixel 9 Pro. Furthermore included in the Pro edition are Ultra Wideband (UWB) capabilities and Google’s emphasis on artificial intelligence shown by 16GB of RAM in every variation, therefore enabling multitasking and handling of challenging AI models.
Inside a recyclable paper packaging, the Pixel 9 Pro is presented together with only a USB-C cord. For €40 Google also provides an authentic Pixel 9 case in six colors. Made from soft silicone that is simple to remove from your pocket, the case fits well, particularly around the camera bar.
With its flat glass front, rear, and sides, Google’s Pixel 9 series design stresses flat surfaces. Though prone to fingerprint smudges, the frame is polished aluminum and gives the phone a sleek, luxury vibe. The elegant Obsidian black that makes up our evaluation sample gives the phone a polished appearance.
Up from last year’s specifications, the Pixel 9 Pro has a faster Tensor G4 processor and 16GB of RAM. With a 0.1-inch increment, the display is also somewhat bigger. Though the ultrawide lens now boasts a brighter aperture, the camera system mimics last year’s Pixel 8 Pro; the selfie camera is a major improvement with its 42MP resolution.
