WhatsApp Beta for Android brings in Mentions of Status Update Features

With mention capabilities—which have been in development since March— WhatsApp is poised to improve its Status tool. Originally accessible to test users on Android, this new capability is likely to be released worldwide shortly.

WABetaInfo claims that while posting a picture or video in their Status on WhatsApp beta version 2.24.20.3, users may use the mention function by pressing the ‘@’ button adjacent to the description box.

Should a user include a contact in their Status, that contact will be notified. When they see the designated Status, a button adjacent to the reply box will allow them to reshare the Status to their own audience.

Crucially, unlike equivalent elements on Instagram, the original creator’s identity will stay private when a named contact changes the Status. Furthermore, the reference will not be obvious to other Status watchers, therefore preserving the privacy of the author as well as the contacted person.

The specified contact will still be able to read the Status even if privacy settings limit their access to view other updates.

Users wanting to test this function may join the beta program even if the public release date for it is still unknown. See Android 15 is Official but Not Available for Everyone Yet for more on most latest Android changes.
